Bathroom Behavior Observation #2

It's almost as if I had written this myself. I have heard one or two people on the cell phone in the bathroom at work.

Subliminal Clues and Psychoanalysis

Is the song on a person's "My Space" significant? Does it give you an insight into their psyche? I'm inclined to think people give their song some thought before they put it up there, so my answer would be "yes". Not being a psychologist, I can't give this a professional opinion.....but it's always interesting to speculate on what somebody's song means in terms of what is going on in his or her life. Is that reading too much into stuff?

Some people change their song frequently, likely with their mood or recent experience(s). What if someone rarely (never) changes it? Does that indicate laziness, lack of use of their My Space, or someone who picked their theme song and is keeping it until the artist removes it? Another interesting thing is that someone's song doesn't always fit their personality (or else your preconceived notion of their personality). There's one guy at work we call "Mr. Furious" because he often emanates anger, but the interesting thing is that his song is a classical orchestra piece. What if someone doesn't have a song? What does that mean?

I think the study of science and people have one big thing in common. Science is fascinating because it follows rules and is so predictable once you understand the rules. Yet it's also unpredictable in the sense that there are many nuances and undiscovered combinations of these rules that always bring new ideas and problems. People are so fascinating for exactly the same reasons. And still, there is nothing new under the sun......Amazing.

Weekends

Here's a few pictures from the last couple of weekends.

It's always more fun to cook breakfast when you have a
two-year-old to help you "crash" the eggs.

Wally World

Is it just my imagination, or has the Wal-Mart class of clientele declined in recent years? When I was a kid, I didn't think Wal-Mart was that bad, and in college it seemed OK too. But now when I go there, I see all kinds of people with sunburned necks, mullets, and bad teeth. Maybe it's just a function of the state and town I'm living in? Are the people in ND higher class people all around? Maybe I have become a snob and started noticing these things?

To address the comments from my previous blog entry, it looks like I may have committed a fashion faux pas at the Y. What's wrong with wearing black socks? I just don't see the issue. Sometimes just for fun, I wear my knee-high argyle patterned ones that I wore to work that day. I do agree on not wearing jean shorts. That just seems like it would be uncomfortable. And one time I did see a major goof by a guy there. He was wearing shorts that looked like a pair of those basketball shorts from the 70's (they may have even been shorter than that). It wasn't pretty.

Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction

As I was minding my own weight lifting at the Y yesterday, I saw two guys doing some very unusual sit-ups. One guy was laying on one of those tilted boards made for doing sit-ups and crunches on, and he was doing sit-ups in the normal way. However, what was unusual was that his exercise buddy was punching his stomach every time he reached the peak of his sit-up. When he was so tired he couldn't do any more sit-ups, then he and his buddy would switch places and repeat the routine. I think this went on for at least 15 minutes. I've seen people do ab workouts by people trying to lift their feet and their buddy pushing their feet back down, but this punching thing was a new one.

Speaking of exercise and the Y, the problem with exercising so much is that I have to wash clothes so often. So when I'm low on workout clothes, I either have to wear dirty ones or else wear some not-so-hip ones. Which is worse? To smell like a stale locker room before you even start sweating? Or, to wear your shorts to the gym that you had in tenth grade and that are now very tight because you've gained some weight since then (and they're out of style)? How extreme in the clothes department do you have to get before you can commit a fashion faux pas at the Y? How much do other people at the gym notice what you're wearing? Are Umbros still "in"?

The Knack

Any engineers out there will likely think this video is funny, and/or you may have already seen it. For those of you who aren't engineers, you'll probably just roll your eyes and/or feel pity. You may also fear for your young children or your unborn children.

Random Thoughts of the Day

When the dental hygienist asked me today if I'd been having any problems with my teeth, I said no, but I felt like saying "No, but I usually do after you guys get done poking my gums with your metal utensils." There is something relaxing about the dentist though. That warm light shining on me and sitting still makes me want to fall asleep. I think those little "sanitary baggies" they put on the handles of the bright light are just there to make you feel better that they aren't spreading germs. If they extend their fingers too far, the tips of their fingers touch the uncovered part anyway, which is the part of their hand they put in your mouth.

Today I also went to a township board of trustees meeting - the first time I ever did that. I went to help support the protest against a gas station Primar Petroleum wanted to put in near where I live. It turns out Primar Petroleum dropped the gas station idea, requested that the property be re-zoned for professional offices (which they voted to do), and then later in the meeting the trustees voted to purchase the same land from the company for $150,000 for the new fire station. Huh?!?!?!? I don't know if I'm missing part of the picture or if the trustees are pulling a fast one. They haven't even shown any architectural drawings for the fire station, but they voted to spend all kinds of funds to build this nebulous fire station. Something very strange is going on I'm thinking. Who knew a township meeting could be so interesting and entertaining?
