Knitting Knowledge Kneaded
The gratitude photojournal from the past week will be a couple days late. Here's something to tide you over.
I have a sweater that I really like. It has sentimental value because I bought it as a souvenir when I visited Ireland. On top of that, it has a lot of features that I really like. First off, it's blue. In fact, two different shades of blue - navy and more of a royal blue. It has a "T-shirt under the sweater" look all in one sweater. In general I kind of like that look, but I don't always execute it because sometimes the underneath shirt gets bunched up underneath and it's hard to get the "feel" right when you have two shirts on. It also has some very nice subtle piping stripes around the neck, down the sides, and at the pseudo sweater sleeve ends. Finally, at the bottom it ends with kind of a curly thing on the sleeves, which is an interesting look. So, all around, it's a good sweater. It says "me". There's just one problem. It has a few holes. They're mostly on the sleeve. Not gigantic, but kind of noticeable.
I have several questions related to this:
- Is it possible to repair this sweater?
- If I wear the sweater with holes in it, will people notice?
- If you've seen me wear it in the last year or two, have you noticed the holes?
- If people notice, will they think less of me?
- Should I throw this sweater away?
- Where can I find a similar sweater to purchase a replacement (if needed)?
- Is there somewhere I could commission someone to make an exact replica?

I am told that you can mend holes like that in a way that requires no knitting, or even any yarn. Apparently, you can use thread, or fishing line, or hair... I guess they don't show afterwards.
I have never done this myself, but I have a similar hole I have been pondering fixing for a while. One day, I may get it done.
1.Is it possible to repair this sweater?--PROBABLY
2.If I wear the sweater with holes in it, will people notice?--SOME WILL.
3.If you've seen me wear it in the last year or two, have you noticed the holes?--I HAVEN'T SEEN IT, SO NO.
4.If people notice, will they think less of me?--IF THEY DO, DO YOU CARE? SHOULD YOU?
5.Should I throw this sweater away?--NO, ITS STILL A GOOD PLAY SWEATER.
6.Where can I find a similar sweater to purchase a replacement (if needed)?-- BACK IN IRELAND?
7.Is there somewhere I could commission someone to make an exact replica?
--IS THIS A HINT?
This is pretty small yarn, so making an exact replica would be pretty difficult. Put it on your 'to bring' list next time we meet up in some random locale, and I'll see if its fixable. Questions, though:
Is it wool? Did it come with extra yarn?
I THINK I saw you wear the sweater and didn't notice any holes - but don't go by me. :)
In case you don't find some one to repair it, there are similar sweaters out there, but not plentiful! http://www.sanseed.com/semi-two-piece-turtleneck-woolen-sweater.html

Blarney Mills must have an on-line store.
I wouldn't notice the holes OR care, but that would mean absolutely nothing fashion wise or relationship wise. A wise crack by:

Bee Schmert,
It did not come with extra yarn as far as I remember. It is 100% lambswool. That was a hint, but mostly to get a reaction. I'm not really expecting you to knit me a sweater.
Finally got around to reading your knitting blog and what a coincidence. I also have a blue wool sweater purchased in Dublin that has large holes in both elbows. Because of the sentimental value and the fact that it's the most comfortable sweater I've ever owned I'm not willing to throw it out. Probably the week you were here I finally took it to a local shop and made a deal to have it repaired. I'm probably committing a grave disservice to my Irish sweater but they are repairing it by putting leather patches over the holes which are much bigger than the holes on yours are. I'll let you know if the "fix" is acceptable.
