Life Lesson

While on vacation last week I read the classic book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell.  When I was in high school I guess it wasn't on the "classics to read" list anymore.  I found it to be a sad book, yet fascinating in a way.  It was originally written as a commentary on communism in Russia back in the 40's.  Even though the book is about animals, I think it is a great illustration of human nature working unchecked.  It also illustrates the power of education.

We don't like the current government, so a revolution is staged.  New people come to power.  However, as time marches on and they gain power, those people turn into the same type of people they despised previously.  And, when we think we're doing what we want, we're willing to endure all kinds of hardships even if they don't make sense to others looking on.  If oppression gradually occurs and the dictator/leader has a good PR person/animal, then people learn to endure more and more hardship and begin to find it to be sort of normal.

As I said, it's kind of a sad little book, but it gives you some food for thought.
